Why Govardhan Puja Is Celebrated After Diwali Next Day
Diwali falls on Amavasya. Govardhan Puja belongs to the lunar day that follows, Pratipada, the first day of Kartik’s bright fortnight. That’s the link. This year, though, Monday 9 November is still the Amavasya morning, with no separate festival. The rule that matters is Udaya Tithi, the tithi present at sunrise. On 10 November Pratipada is running at sunrise, so the puja moves to that morning.Govardhan Puja Muhurat

What Is Govardhan Puja?
Govardhan Puja also called Annakut puja. Puja performed to honor Govardhan hill in Braj, also known as Giriraj or Giriraji, on Kartik Shukla Pratipada. On this auspicious day, people worship lord krishna and Govardhan hill. It symbolizes the defeat of Lord Indra by Lord Krishna and also reflects the strong historical ties between lord krishna and the cow.Families shape a small hill from cow dung, add tiny cow figures, and use grass for trees. The puja is one segment of the wider Annakut, the “mountain of food” offered to Krishna. Then do Puja, worship of cows, do parikrama. It’s a gentler festival than Diwali. Less noise, more food.
Why Is Govardhan Puja Celebrated? The Story of Govardhan Puja
Mentioned in one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, Bhagavata Purana. It talks about the people who lived in Braj. The cowherds of Braj used to pay respect to Lord Indra (Lord of rain) in autumn for rain. Once Lord young Krishna asked them to pay respect to Govardhan Hill instead of Lord Indra as it offers rain, feeds many people and animals, provides irrigation to lands and is a true contribution to mother Earth. The people of Braj stopped offering food to Lord Indra and Started worship of Govardhan Hill. Lord Indra became furious and his wrath arrived as a storm. To protect the people from Indra’s wrath, Krishna held the Govardhan Hill up on his little finger for seven days and nights. Under Govardhan Hill, people of Braj and animals took shelter for days, until Indra surrendered. After this Lord Indra surrendered and realised his mistake. From that day onwards, people worship Govardhan Hill, out of that came Annakut. Indra gave way to Girirajji worship.
Significance of Govardhan Puja
The Purpose of Govardhan Puja
Shows Gratitude, mostly. It thanks the land, cattle and harvest that feed a household, and puts humility ahead of pride.Govardhan puja significance runs on two levels. Spiritually, it marks Krishna sheltering his devotees. Practically, it’s thanksgiving to nature which is why cow worship sits at its heart. For many Gujarati families, it’s also New Year, Bestu Varas, and some craftsmen honour their tools and machines that day.

Govardhan Puja Bhog: Annakut and Chappan Bhog Items
Annakut is the mound of cooked grains that represents the Govardhan Hill. Chappan Bhog is considered to be a 56-dish offering. It is believed that Lord Krishna ate eight meals a day and went without food for seven days, so devotees offered 56 dishes (7 × 8).
Typical items include kheer, rabri, malpua, ghewar, jalebi, laddoo, mohanbhog, moong dal halwa, rasgulla, kadhi, khichdi, dal, rice, mathri, papad, pakode, chutney, dahi, lassi, butter, malai, ghee and honey. Milk products go closest to the deity, then besan items, then salty dishes, with elaichi last. Many temples skip onion and garlic.
Can’t manage 56? Offer what you can cook with a good heart. Many families offer fewer. It is also seen that some shopkeepers or craftsmen keep their scales and tools beside the Annakut, to honour their tools that day.
