Who is the Day-3 Navratri Goddess — Maa Chandraghanta?

Maa Chandraghanta is the third form of Durga. Her name comes from the crescent moon (Chandra) on her forehead that looks like a bell (ghanta). She is shown wearing the half-moon and often has many hands holding weapons and a rosary. She is both peaceful and ready to fight evil.

Mata Chandraghat symbolises courage, strength and victory over evil opponents. She bestows courage and protection to her devotees and dispels negativity, fear and obstacles.

Goddess Chandragahnata is depicted riding a lion and holding various weapons and symbols with her 10 hands. According to the mythology, the goddess is the married form of Goddess Parvati and is associated with peace, bravery, and serenity.

  • Light a diya (lamp) and some incense. Begin with Ganesh Vandana (a short prayer to Lord Ganesha). 
  • Offer red flowers to the mata (deity) and chant her mantra: (ॐ देवी चंद्रघण्टायै नमः (Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah)
  •  Repeat this 11 or 21, 51 or 108 times if you can.
  • Offerings (bhog): fruits, sweets, flowers, water, and panchamrit are commonly offered. Some devotees also offer sindoor (vermillion) on this day.
  • Finish with aarti and share prasad with family.
