Navratri Day 1 Focus Deity: Maa Shailaputri
- Who is she?
Daughter of the Himalayas (“Shaila-putri”), incarnation of Goddess Parvati and Sati. She rides Nandi the bull, holding a trident and a lotus. - Symbolism:
Emblematic of purity, strength, and root-level stability (linked to Muladhara Chakra). She embodies steadfastness and grounding energy.

Mata Shailputri Mantra:
Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah- Chanting the above mantra on Day 1 Navratri invokes the blessing of the goddess. As per the hindu mythology, one can bring the blessings of purity, strength and prosperity by offering prayers to the deity.
Ghatasthapana Also Known as Kalash Sthapana& Pujan Vidhi
Materials Needed:- Kalash (copper/earthen/steel), mauli (sacred thread)
- Clean water (or Gangajal), mango/ashoka leaves, coconut, red cloth
- Supari, akshat (rice), turmeric, kumkum, durva, coins
- Barley seeds (jau), soil/tray, water
- Lamp (deepak), incense, flowers, fruits, sweets
- Picture or idol of Maa Shailaputri, red chunri.
Steps:
Clean and set up puja space with red/yellow cloth on chowki.Start Ghatasthapana during muhurat:
- Fill the tray with soil and sow barley seeds, designated for kalash.
- Tie mauli around kalash, fill water, add supari, akshat, coins, durva, leaves; place coconut on top.
Offer worship:
- Apply tilak on deity with kumkum and haldi
- Offer red flowers, fruits, sweets
- Chant: Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah 108 times
- Perform aarti and offer naivedya
- Cover deity with red chunri

- Chant a Maa Shailputri mantra 108 or 51 or 11 times depending on your wish.
- Also, if you have time visit your nearby Maa Durga Temple.
- You can also take part in aarti inside the temple or at your home in the evening at your convenience.

Do’s
- Wake up early, take a bath and wear fresh/clean clothes (try to wear an orange dress as it is connected to the day 1 of navratri).
- Recite Durga Saptashati Paath, Durga stotras, and Mata Shailputri Mantras.
- Upon fasting, take satvik food (milk, fruits, light fasting meals).
- Offer aarti to the goddess in the evening or late evening.
- Gather all pujan samagri (sacred worshipping tools) that are mentioned above.
- Start Ghatasthapana/ Kalash Sthapana within muhurat; maintain akhand jyot when safe; water barley daily.
Don’t:
- Do not start the pujan at late night
- Do not disturb kalash and kalash pot once placed
- Avoid any tamshik food (non veg items) in any case. Also do not consume alcohol, onion, garlic, and processed foods specially during the fast.
