About the 7th Day of Navratri Goddess: Who is Mata Kalratri?

Mata Kalratri is the seventh incarnation (avataar) of Goddess Durga, who is the fierce aspect of the divine feminine, associated with darkness and destruction. Her name, Kaalratri, derives from Kaal, which means time or death, and ratri, the night. Therefore, she embodies the destruction of darkness, which is evil forces. Although the deity appears fierce, she represents transformation and protects her devotees from fear and danger.

Appearance of Deity Kalratri Mata

Kaalratri is depicted with a dark, or even black, complexion. She rides a donkey and has long, flowing hair. Her eyes are large, reddish, and intense, symbolising her focus on destroying evil forces.

The deity has four hands; one holds a sword, and another holds an iron hook. These weapons symbolise her power to destroy evil energies and demons. The other two hands of the deity are in Abhaya Mudra (blessing posture) and Varaha Mudra, showing her protective power towards their devotees.

The deity’s tongue is long, stretched out of her mouth, and flames sometimes appear surrounding her, symbolising her fiery nature and ability to end evil forces.

Kalratri Mata Story

According to Hindu mythology and ancient holy texts, once there were the demons named Sumbh and Nisumbh, along with their general, Raktabeej. They invaded the realm of the Gods (Devlok) and threatened the Gods. Their wish was to take control of the 3 worlds. Raktabeej was blessed with a boon that in battle, if even a single drop of blood touches the ground, a new Raktabeej with the same strength will spring to life.

Seeing the god’s helplessness, the goddess Parvati took her fierce form as Chandi (Ambika) and further manifested the goddess Kalratri. The deity then fought with the demon Raktbeej and destroyed him by using her long tongue to catch every drop of Raktbeej’s blood.
