Anant Chaturdashi is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated across India. It has its special observance in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The festival marks the last day of the Ganesh Chaturthi, when the devotees immerse the lord Ganesha’s idol in water. This year, the sacred festival (Anant Chaturdashi 2025) falls on 6th September 2025.
The auspicious day is devoted to Lord Vishnu, where people worship his eternal form, Anant (infinity), and seek his blessing. Let’s break it down, explore the festival’s significance, and other aspects:
What is Anant Chaturdashi?
Anant Chaturdashi is a celebration that respects the infinite or endless form of Deity Vishnu. The word “Anant” never-ending. On this day, the Universe ruler Vishnu is revered to get his divine assurance and blessings.Mythologically, this celebration is connected to a sacred thread called the Anant Sutra. It is accepted that those who adore and worship the endless form of Vishnu on this day by wearing the holy thread (consisting14 knots) get peace, victory, and security from all issues.
Why is Anant Chaturdashi Celebrated?
According to Hindu sacred writings, once there was a sage named Kaundinya. He insulted the Anant Sutra unconsciously and confronted numerous hardships. Afterward, he realized his mistake and begged forgiveness from the lord. Anant kept fast for 14 years and performed the rituals of Anant Pujnam and overcame all the difficulties he was facing in his life. The tale highlights the significance of devotion, faith towards the eternal form of God Vishnu, and the lord’s blessings on their devotees.

Feeling confused about how to observe? Here’s a simple, step-by-step approach:
- Before sunrise: Clean your living space, take a holy bath, and prepare your puja area with Lord Vishnu’s image.
 - Set things up: Place a wooden platform (chowki), cover it with a clean cloth, and arrange offerings (bhog)—fruits, puris, sweets like kheer—for the deity.
 - Puja & Katha: Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu with incense and lamps. Listen to or read the Anant Vrat Katha and chant, if possible.
 - Tie the Anant Sutra: With devotion, wear it after prayers—men on the right arm, women on the left. It stays for 14 days for continuous blessings.
 - Ganesh Visarjan: If you did Ganesh puja at home, this is when you bid farewell—immersion in river or water body, respectfully and joyfully
 - Break the fast: Share a calming, pure meal with family to conclude the rituals.

Why this festival matters
- Anchored in infinity: It reminds us that even when physical forms depart, the divine virtue stays constant. The Anant Sutra and Ganesha’s farewell carry deep lessons on holding on to what matters and letting go with faith
 - Balance in life: Like the tug between attachment and freedom, the rituals teach us healthy detachment, spiritual growth, and inner wisdom.
 - Practical and uplifting: Tying the thread is not just symbolic. It’s a daily reminder of virtues that guide our actions and protect our peace.

Final Thoughts
Anant Chaturdashi brings a beautiful blend of emotion and spiritual clarity. It marks both the heartfelt farewell to Lord Ganesha and a deeper embrace of Lord Vishnu’s infinite grace. As Ganesha returns to his divine abode, he takes away life’s obstacles, reminding us that most troubles are temporary. At the same time, the sacred Anant Sutra we tie serves as a silent promise of divine protection and the endless presence of Vishnu’s blessings. On this day, we are gently invited to reflect on life’s cycles—letting go when it’s time, while holding onto what truly sustains us.
