According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Vishnu goes off to sleep (called the Yoga Nidra) for a period of four months on Devshayani Ekadashi, the Ekadashi tithi of Aashad month. Devutthani Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhani Ekadashi, is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the Hindu month of Kartik.

During this four-month period, no auspicious work takes place. It is only after the auspicious day of Devutthani Ekadashi, which is falling on 31st October this year that marriages, home-buying and other auspicious things could be done.

Significance – According to Hindu mythology and traditions, Devutthani Ekadashi holds a lot of significance. No auspicious activity is done during the four months when Lord Vishnu is asleep. This time period is called the Chaturmas. Devutthani Ekadashi marks the beginning of wedding season and helps to attain liberation and offers immense benefits to all devotees.

Rituals of the Day

  • A picture of Lord Vishnu is drawn on the ground at the place of worship and is covered with a brass plate to symbolise the sleeping of the lord.
  • Devotees observe a fast and spend the whole day without eating or even drinking water. The ones who observe fast on Devutthani Ekadashi visit Lord Vishnu’s temple and performs all Puja rituals.
  • Lord Vishnu is worshipped with lamps, fruits and vegetables. Devotees sing bhakti songs or bhajans and pray for their loved ones’ well-being.
  • On the next day of Devutthani Ekadashi, the marriage ceremony of Lord Vishnu to Goddess Tulsi is performed by devotees (sometimes in a grand way). This ceremony is known as ‘Tulsi Vivaah’ and is considered highly auspicious
