Raksha bandhan is celebrated with much fanfare on the full-moon day (Purnima) in the month of Shravan. As per our scriptures, Raksha bandhan should not be observed in the Bhadra (inauspicious) time of Shravani and Phalguni Nakshatra as it can bring unhappiness and destruction in one’s life. The thread-tying ceremony not only reflects the unconditional bond of love amongst brothers and sisters, but also holds immense spiritual significance.

WELCOME THE DIVINE ENERGY

Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati bless the siblings with immense divine powers on this auspicious day.

The Aarti performed by the sister balances Agni tattva (fire element) in a man’s body.

Tying a Rakhi on the wrist awakens the Shakti tattva (Power element) in both the brother as well as sister.

The immense faith, utmost devotion and selfless spirituality of a sister pave way to her brother’s progress, prosperity and divine blessings of the Almighty.

SIGNIFICANCE OF SATTVIC RAKHI

A silk thread with akshata (tied in a cloth) at its centre is called Sattvic Rakhi. The silk thread helps transmit spiritual energy from a girl to her brother, while akshata destroys the evil forces with white cotton cloth bringing freshness in lives of siblings. Sattvic rakhi activates the surya chakra in a man’s body and awakens the Shiva principle, which reduces the harmful effects of Rajas and Tamas energy. On the other hand, non-sattvic rakhi increases the Rajas and Tamas elements in a man’s body leaving him lethargic, greedy, anxious and stressed out.

SIGNIFICANCE OF SATTVIC GIFT

On this pious occasion, it is advisable to offer Sattvic Gifts to sisters such as rosary, beads, religious texts etc. as they help invoke the feelings of love, peace, patience and harmony. Moreover, such serene presents diminish the levels of rajas and tamas energy, which further helps lower the levels of anger, desperation and materialistic desires.

RITUALS TO BE FOLLOWED

  • On this auspicious day, the siblings take early bath in the morning to commence the rituals.
  • The sisters prepare puja thali that includes vermillion, lighting lamp, flowers, sweets, riceand
  • After offering prayers to Divine, she performs Aarti of her beloved brother with the puja thali, applies tilak on his forehead to awaken his spiritual consciousness and ties sattvic rakhi around his wrist.
  • Finally, the brother bestows her dear sister with sattvic gifts and presents of her choice.

II WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN II
